The code created from the DXF was pure arcs. 0005 and the code was longer because the arcs were still broken down into tiny arcs joined with a tiny line between them. While playing around with this part imported as a DXF vs STL, I learned that the DXF worked better. I can make this simple part with 53 lines of code vs 352 using line segments to create the arcs. That has greatly reduced the file sizes I'm working with. One of the big draws for me about CamBam is that it supports arcs with absolute centers, which my Hurco requires. I had been trying to create MOPs from just the surface and that doesn't work. I have now been able to load the STL file, align the imported surface, setup the stock, detect the edges and create MOPs using those edges. I don't think he covered it, but I also found that very simple solution I knew was out there. I did find it very helpful in getting the basics down. He works from a DXF on there, which is why I hadn't watched it before to help with the STLs I'd been using.
It's long and can be hard to see what's on the projected screen, but I would recommend it to any newbie trying to learn CB. In the meantime, I found and watched a classroom video on YouTube called CamBam with Kirk Benson. I registered on the CamBam forum, but it hasn't been accepted yet.
If you know of a good tutorial that starts with a STL file, I'd like to see it, too. Something that is probably very simple and if I just knew what that was, I could stop wasting time and get to cutting. If I try to drill the holes, a circle is added in the center that doesn't align with any of the existing holes. The only thing I've been able to do with this part is create a "3D profile" that only makes straight cuts on the flat face of the part. Every tutorial I've found starts with drawing the part in CamBam. The problem is I've spent some time playing around with it for a couple days and it's just not clicking when an imported STL file is used. CamBam looks like a great tool.once you know how to use it. It's fast and very easy to get something cutting, but I think I'm going to need more control for most of what I'm working on. I'm new to CAM and I've been working with MeshCAM for a couple weeks. 25 end mill for circle pocket around small hole. 5 end mill for face and sides (bottom of stock will already be faced). Can someone please take this simple 2.5D part that I've attached and walk me through the steps to align it with the stock and create the tool paths?
